Let us talk about RULES

Hello everyone,
Let me start by introducing myself. I am the creator and the maintainer of this community, I love coffee, and I admire good photography. Since the community appeared on the [info]lj_spotlight, our numbers have visibly increased. We used to be about 40 people watching [info]coffee_pictures, with about 4 of us posting every now and then. The community was not very active, but if you page through the good old times (archive will allow you to), you'll notice the quality we maintained. Now we are over 800 coffee lovers, and I feel like the community is changing from within. Guys and girls, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to thank you and to welcome all and every single one of you! Now, to the point...

..:: NB | Please read | NB ::..

So we are over 800, and we all love coffee, thus everyone wants to post. Good stuff. Now, imagine your friends page after everybody posts... Ugh, 800 posts all coming from [info]coffee_pictures, that's bad stuff! Bye-bye, bandwidth... The conclusion? Pretty simple. Please do post, we need your pictures here. Just don't get upset if it is not approved immediately by the moderators. I suggest the following rule:

Rule 1: Not more than about 4-5 posts per day. Or should we make it 3? Or even one a day? Please provide feedback in the comments to this post.

We love coffee, and we enjoy taking pictures of it. Some arty, some pretty dull and blurry. In this community, we want only the arty ones. So here comes...

Rule 2: Moderation will be quite strict. The picture should look artistic, not just decently sharp. Else, it should be original (paintings, cartoons, etc.). Or should it not? Would you rather prefer to see all kinds of coffee expressions? Please comment.

Last but not least:
Rule 3: Be consistent and save the bandwidth. This means that all pictures larger than 500px in width posted without an lj-cut will be rejected, all text posts with no pictures will be rejected, links posted instead of pictures will be rejected. When you post, make sure you post a picture, and put it behind the lj-cut if it's too big. As simple as that.

Ok, let us sort out these rules once and for all. Please criticise and make suggestions in the comments. Both English & Russian are accepeted; sorry, I don't speak other languages =)

And, finally, just to be consistent with my own rules, here is a coffee cup for you:

I think a limit of one post per member per day would be great. If they want to put several pictures under a cut, that would be great (it's all about consolidation!). If everyone posted several posts a day, everyone's friend's list would over flow. (Especially if they post one un-cut picture each post) :(

I'd like just to see original, artistic pictures. :)

Thanks for this community. :)

i second this. one post per member per day. but dont limit it to 4 posts TOTAL for the day, that would be no fun. ive joined a few lj spotlight communities and then no sooner do i join, the rules change (understandably so), and the community isn't quite what made me want to join anymore. so. one post, per member, per day. i think thats fair. :)

Like the rules.

Thanks anna_earwen for posting rules and expectations. As with most newbies to this group, I found it on the LJ spotlight. I'd just like to add that I'd love to know the name and place (especially if a business) of the picture if appropriate.

Other than that, I like the rules, though I think you'll find many interpretations of _artistic_, especially in photography. :)

Re: Like the rules.

That is true, but artistic is usually visible in all of its forms: one can usually see whether or not the picture taken had a meaning and a composition behind it or not. I think "artistic" is imprecise, anyway, that's why I allowed most of the pictures to go through, even when I did not personally like some of them. I wonder if I have the right to rely on my own personal taste here.

One post per day sounds about right, as well as the more artistic side of coffee in photography, or even in other original art. I think expressing a thing such as coffee in a painting would be absolutely beautiful to see!
:)
I also have to agree with wakanai - the name and place of the picture would be nice, as well as if it came from an establishment.

I like the idea of posting where you took the picture, that would be cool.

& one post per day per member sound good. if you MUST add another picture, go back & edit the original post.

& i think everyone's idea of art is different...so maybe that rule is a bit much. but other than that, great community, love it! :)

I like some of these rules. Moderated posting I think is a bit extreme, but it is your comm. Spotlight comms will die down again. One post per day for a person is a good rule.

(I would like to see more of the Russian posts that I saw when I first joined! Я не говарю по-русский хорощо, но я читаю! )

I think 3 is more than enough posts. I really love the idea of this com - I'm always on the hunt for good stock images and this is great :) thank you so much :)

Just a suggestion...

You should have a look at this community... http://community.livejournal.com/day_on_earth/

They have a really good method. If the pictures are THAT frequent in this community, you should think of doing something along the same lines.

Re: Just a suggestion...

Not bad, but I want to actually see the pictures on my friends page. I won't bother browsing external pages.

I also joined this community because I saw it on the LJ spotlight (I doubt I would have found it otherwise), and I think some sort of moderation will be necessary, but I think only 3-4 posts per day is a *tad* extreme. One post per member per day seems ok though, since it seems like many of the members are just browsing anyways.

Also, I think "artistic" is a bit subjective. It seems like one of those "in the eye of the beholder" things. I think things like a painting of a cup of coffee would be cool and should be just as acceptable as a photo of a cup of coffee.

Other than that, I'd say putting large photos under an LJ cut is fair, maybe with a teaser pic outside of the cut.

I would appreciate it if you continued to let coffee art (not just photos) be posted. I recently joined and shared a couple of paintings I did with coffee--that is, I painted them with nothing but coffee, and it would be nice to have a community I could continue sharing this rather odd medium with. To be honest, I've never taken a decent photo in my life and unless I was able to share my own coffee outlet, I wouldent be contributing much to the community. Thanks.

[info]anna_earwen

All paintings will be allowed indeed, please bring it on! Out of question!

March 8 2007, 21:54:33 UTC 5 years ago

hallo, if I might interject...perhaps if you restrict posts to once per-day, you could leave an option open for to members *editing* their posts so they could add additional images behind a LJ-cut (with an edit caption/cut so the viewers will know). That way if they really need/want to post more than once, they sort of have that option, and it won't bog things down.

:) I volunteer as an art director for an independent coffee house...so these images I find intriguing...sadly my barista's don't know how to make the latte art...yet. I'll be there with a camera once they do.

Thanks for getting specific about the rules! Once a day work just fine for me, especially seeing as how I don't have a digital camera and will only be able to offer pictures once in a great while. I'll have to start carrying a disposable camera...

Ever since I signed up, my friend's page is much prettier! Thanks for the amazing pics, everyone!

Pretty much all of my thoughts have been voiced, heehee. I personally don't mind having a ton of posts, however. I have separate filters for "friends" and "communities" so comm spam isn't a problem on my FList.

I like all kinds of coffee, though, artsy or not. 'Course I'm a little biased. I tend to draw my coffee dreams rather than photographing, and I'm not the best, heh...heh....

But I'm definitely all for cuts. Cut cut cut on bug pics. Big pics make the baby Buddha cry when they's nekkid ;-;

[info]anna_earwen

March 9 2007, 07:08:39 UTC 5 years ago

Makes me cry as well. So the lj-cut rule is here to stay.

I like the idea of one post per day. If someone has a really great SECOND picture save it and use it the next day.

And as to the moderation on posts....while everyone has different tastes in art....I think it is acceptable that mod's can pick and choose what gets to be posted....that being said, my one and only attempt was approved and recieved with some great comments so I can't really argue. :) There is bound to be some eljay dramarama with 800 members but had it not been for the spotlight I wouldn't be here.

Now THAT is a lovely cup of coffee....I almost wouldn't want to drink it. :)

Oh no, I definitely would, if I could only get my hands on a cup like this =)

March 9 2007, 01:04:00 UTC 5 years ago

I think your rules sound fair enough, especially since this site, like you said, has grown quite a bit since it's inception.

One post a day I can live with, I guess. If I have more coffee stuff I wanna post, it's not going to kill me to hold on to it for the next day or whatever. Life goes on.

And I am into any kind of coffee pictures, really. Art is so subjective, anyhow. One person's "trash" may be one person's masterpiece ( and you are listening to someone who was an Art History major in college). So I don't want to say that only one type of coffee picture would work for me. I'll leave that up to you mod's.

That's about it. I think none of what you said sounds unreasonable. I like this place. I wanna stick around awhile if I may. :)

March 9 2007, 02:17:18 UTC 5 years ago

I agree, the picture taken by the photgrapher is art to them. Though stuff that's so blurry you can't tell what it's of would be slightly annoying.

[info]slartibartfast

March 9 2007, 01:18:50 UTC 5 years ago

I agree with these rules. One a day seems sensible, and I think the pics should be moderated.

[info]mazz

March 9 2007, 02:15:35 UTC 5 years ago

one post a day works for me. Multiple pictures under a cut please. :D

Glad art is allowed.. I suck at photos but I can whip up some cartoons on ocassion.

[info]dieseling

March 9 2007, 06:38:48 UTC 5 years ago

Personally, I don't check my livejournal all the time, and while I really enjoy looking at pictures of coffee, truly, in all it's forms and cups and countries, I think having more than 4 pictures/posts A DAY Total is too much and will eventually cause me to remove this community. :(
When I signed up, I believed it would be pretty strictly coffee-pictures, like it says. It's not 'coffee-discussion' or 'coffee love'.
I enjoy a really well done piece of art whether it is a photo or painting, but I am not interested in getting overwhelmed by everyone's coffee love, ramblings or cravings!
So I say keep it down to a few, quality pictures a day..

[info]anna_earwen

March 9 2007, 07:15:59 UTC 5 years ago

This is exactly the essence, I mean, this is why I created the community: I wanted to see coffee _pictures_ on my friends page. Not just pictures, _good_ pictures.

[info]thelastaurora

March 9 2007, 07:39:53 UTC 5 years ago

Personally I like the idea of having one post per day, any other submitters after that post could post their pictures in the comments of that post. That way no one's friends list is totally taken up by coffee (though some days that's no neccesarily a bad thing)

Also, in regards to the art style/quality. I think as long as it shows a high end quality of photography/drawing/painting/etc it's okay. In other words, keep it on the artsy side of things.

[info]hagar_972

March 9 2007, 08:29:45 UTC 5 years ago

I think, so long as everything is under cuts, the number of posts matter less: small-space posts are less annoying en masse than bulky posts.

Also, one post per day per member seems really reasonable, particularly with an added 'safety clause' of "The moderator reserves the right to postpone release of posts if the community is having a busy day."

Thumbs up on the 'artistic'! That's the point, no? That, and coffee...

[info]anna_earwen

March 9 2007, 10:05:42 UTC 5 years ago

It is exactly the point! My problem was that people posted rather inartistic pictures, and other lj users seemed to really like it (if you read their comments). So I thought, maybe our tastes differ, but let me rather moderate according to my taste, because I have created the community to please myself, actually, not for the sake of humanity. Thus a picture that does not please me should not go through. My other two moderators are my very good friends, and I trust their taste totally. I just felt the need to explicitly warn - we are going to reject some posts, don't get frustrated if your work does not go through! :)

Hi :)

I wasn't sure where to ask but this seemed a good place as i read the rules. I am not sure why my post was rejected to the coffee list. I can't remember the size of it but if that was it then no biggie I can do an LJ cut. If artistic is an issue well...I took those and I am an artist besides a teacher and the husband is a photographer. I am just covering all the bases since i don't know what was the reason. I am reading the rules and am not sure. An explaination will be helpful for any modification I might do now or in the future since I have never posted before and have watched many a large pic go by. Thanks for whatever answer you can give :)

April 2 2007, 07:22:27 UTC 5 years ago

Hello,

We have three moderators here (me being one of them), and I am not so sure who rejected your post. But most probably it was rejected because we thought it did not look artistic enough... By no means I am trying to doubt your talent (or your husband's talent) or anything such, it's just that of course we are subjective, and not all photos look good to us. In the beginning I was very lenient in the beginning, until I realised that I do not like 3/4 of the photos posted. So, what's the purpose, I thought. My community annoyed me and I felt like unsubscribing from it! The only solution was to introduce stricter moderation. And your post was rejected as a side-effect of this, I suppose.

Please, don't take it personally. I already had some people very p***** off with me because their posts were rejected :( Yes, I am strict. I don't want just any pictures of coffee... I want quality photos. Professional photos would be excellent, but I also let through others that catch my eye. The key here is to catch my eye.

Once again I would like to apologise. Please reconsider the photo you've posted, and if you are sure it fits the standard of the community and was rejected unfairly, post it again and give it a second chance - maybe it'll find a kinder moderator or a moderator in a better mood.
